What Did You Say? What Do You Mean?
Strategies for understanding and coping with the literal minds of those with Autism and Asperger's

Jude Welton studied Art History and English at University before training as a child psychologist at Nottingham University with John and Elizabeth Newson, who were renowned for their pioneering work in the field of autism. She then forged a successful career as an editor and freelance writer, writing mainly on the arts until autism touched her life more closely than she could have expected when her son who is now fifteen years old was diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome. Jude has since written several books on and for children on the autism spectrum.

Topics include:

  • Learning about autism professionally, and living with autism. The difference.

  • The rationale behind the cards. Children with ASD/AS are literal thinkers. What this means to the child with AS: taking words at face value, missing out on tone, intention context, social meaning etc. and how confusing this can make the world.

  • How we (NTs) can be mindful about how we use language to help children with ASD/AS make sense of their world

  • Helping children understand when they've been diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder or Asperger's Syndrome

  • AS and school -- Tips for Teachers, to help them know how best to alter their assumptions and adapt the way they teach to suit the child with Asperger's Syndrome and learning to interpret the behavior and body language of kids with AS

  • The need to acknowledge the difficulties in communication are two-way, respecting differences and take responsibility for bridging the gap.
