Behind The Eight Ball

There is dispute about the origin of this expression. The most plausible version has the phrase derived from the Eight Ball version of the game of pool, the balls being numbered and potted in order. Behind the eight ball indicates a difficult position from which one is unlikely to escape. As a player, your turn is forfeited if your cue ball hits the black eight ball first and the game is forfeited if the eight ball is potted by mistake.
 
Travelling to China, the number eight is expressed graphically as the Bagua, shaped as an octagon and covering the four directions (the NEWS of North, East, West, South) and the four sub-directions (NE, SE, NW, SW). Since directions are also archetypes (if in doubt, meditate on the warm and at time exuberant heart of the people of the South, versus the more dignified containment of Nordic folks), eight is therefore the number of organizing the square of above-the 4 identities in the light, and the square of below-the 4 identities in the shadow; heaven and earth or heaven and hell.
 
As for the symbol of the ball-shall we say symBALL, the Trees of Life of humanity are generally organized around spheres. These spheres, called chakras in Sanskrit and XPR in Hebrew, are little computers that vibrate information and energy. Once climbing either the Hebrew or the Yogic Tree, there is a sphere, literally the eight sphere, which offers such a perilous position that it was its destiny to. But, let us play pool. in order!
